Memorial Day Weekend

Had the school year gone as originally planned, my grades would have been turned in and students would be finished with school. Yes, we still would have had a teacher work day on Tuesday, but the "work" part would be mostly over. As it ended up, we have students Tuesday and the work day is Wednesday. I'm taking a break now from working on grading poetry projects.

But I know I shouldn't whine. This weekend isn't about whining. This weekend is about remembering brave soldiers who gave their lives and honoring them. Had it not been for their sacrifices, we would not be enjoying the freedoms of barbeques, parades, and three-day weekends. Their choices make our choices possible.

I think I'll send a few cards to past and present soldiers, thanking them for their service.

May God continue to bless the U.S.A.!

Irony

I rarely read it, but for some reason I did today. My horoscope for today...

Leo (Jul 23 - Aug 22)
Conflict may arise from insignificant interactions today, yet your tendency may be to turn a disagreement into a real battle. It could take courage to just walk away, for your determination to do the right thing makes it difficult to justify inaction. Keep in mind that your life could be more enjoyable if you just ease off a little with your rigid judgment. Be amused by your moral self-righteousness instead of getting caught up in believing it.

Man, irony is a harsh concept, isn't it? ;-)

My head nearly exploded

My husband and I met up with friends of ours at a chain restaurant tonight for a few hours of fun. About 30 minutes into the evening, we noticed some teenagers dressed for the prom (tuxes and mucho cleavage dresses) in the parking lot outside our window. Well, they ended up sitting behind our friends, so they are in my line of sight (and therefore directly in the line of fire for the thoughts running through my brain). The girls had been POURED into the outfits they were wearing (most the group was in jeans, celebrating a girl's birthday, but four of the group were the ones dressed for a formal dance). Every single time any of the girls stood up to go to the restroom, she had to pick her underwear out of her derriere... comments brewing... some of the girls had the low-rise jeans, mucho belly, and cropped tops... comments brewing... of the eight kids at the table, at least three at any given time were either talking on the phone or text-messaging someone... comments brewing... man, my head hurts now. WHAT were they thinking?

I'm not a sex goddess, and I know that. I try to wear clothes that are appropriate for my body type and age. I'm ok with that. What I don't get is HOW did these young ladies think that what they were wearing was appropriate? One had a hot-pink dress with a deep-cut front and three bikini-string closures in the back. The skirt part of it was low-cut on her bum and had HIGH slits on the legs. There was absolutely NOTHING left to the imagination. It was as if she thought she was J-Lo. I just don't get it.

What will girls be wearing (or NOT wearing) by the time our little guy heads off to the prom? Let's hope Victorian collars and long bloomers are back in style by then. Yeesh.

Kelly Needs...

OK, this cracked me UP! A friend sent me an e-mail instructing me to put in my first name and the word "needs" and see what comes up. Enjoy!

1. Kelly needs her brother backstage. (Ah, they know me so well. My brother is in my all-boy back-up group. Good thing he can also bust-a-move.)

2. Kelly needs a little guidance. (Seriously? Don't we all from time to time?)

3. Kelly needs a hero. (I already have one. My dad was/has been/always will be my hero. I admired him not for his potential, but for his ability to push himself to reach his potential.)

4. Kelly needs a quivering antenna. (Yup. That's all me. An antenna just isn't an antenna unless it's quivering. That's all I ever say.)

5. Kelly needs your help to win Miss Student 2006! (I didn't even know I was UP for the award! Dag... I'm GOOD.)

6. Kelly needs strong finish to make Ryder Cup team. (Um, no. Kelly needs a MIRACLE, especially considering the only "golf" I ever played was in gym class in 10th grade. Tiger Woods can sleep soundly tonight if he was worrying about me.)

7. Kelly needs to get it together and take control of her own destiny. (Yup. I do. I'm ok with that.)

8. Kelly just needs to leave Mathews management but she never will because she feels indebted to them. (No... I don't really feel that indebted to them, especially considering I don't know who they are.)

9. Kelly needs to examine his conscience. (Um, Kelly would first need to call a sex-change doctor in Sweden before "his" conscience was examined. Let's just not go there.)

10. Kelly needs to hire herself a stylist ASAP. (Probably. I'll do that with the spare millions I have hidden in the seat cushions on the couch. Anyone else want a stylist, while I'm at it?)

11. Kelly has so much potential but she needs management that has her best interests at heart. (Yes, I do. How do we go about changing my management? ;-D)

12. Kelly needs to model and leave that singing stuff alone. (No... Kelly would need to leave them BOTH alone, especially if #9 came through.)

13. Kelly needs to get off the snow or blow or crack or meth and dry out. (Drugs are bad. ust say "no" is a pretty good motto. Snow, on the other hand, comes in handy when it cancels school.)

14. Kelly needs to learn how to better serve her students. (Doesn't every teacher? Isn't that part of what makes us professionals?)

15. Kelly needs to be part of a loving, committed marriage. (Don't look at me. That's Google talking. I thought I already was... maybe I should Google what Bob needs?)

Go on... Google yourself. You know you want to.

Seriously?

Someone I know sent me a link that I am passing on to the readers of this blog. http://www.lillypulitzer.com/Offerings/productDetail.aspx?productID=9ddb64bd-e3eb-4a08-8d8a-5142e0377c29&imageID=079f0416-3c30-4153-aa72-fc963c256f85&seasonID=4180b5fa-a953-49ef-8266-9326bff309ba&lineID=4c8ab670-d831-4b07-833f-d60c10eafbf8&page=1&productsPerPage=24

Ummm... seriously? It's horrible enough if you just look at the pattern. I'll admit I was in a state of shock and didn't notice the PRICE at first... SERIOUSLY? I know my husband will never venture into a freakshow blazer like this... and I may have to say a little prayer that this "fashion" doesn't catch on for my son to someday wear! (I wouldn't even want a DAUGHTER wearing this!)

Ah... even if I had $600 tucked away in my wallet I can think of about a billion ways to use it more productively.

I'm speechless.
